The Natural Medicine Network is being created to allow people within the natural medicine community to communicate.  It will be a place collaborate, exchange resources and talk with students and doctors around the country.  This page is the homepage to an online forum that will be released in December 2008 to all those who create a username and password on this page.  The Natural Medicine Network has been designed by a student for prospective students, ND/MSOM students and practitioners.  Friends, family and the curious are also welcome.

Create a username and password on the left side of this page.  This is, of course, free.  Please remember that this is a public forum and you may not want to use your entire name, birthday and social security number as a username.  Click on "read more" if you're not used to online forums.  With hundreds of students and doctors registered so far, there's no telling who you will meet here.  If you find it useful, along pass this link on to the doctors and students you know.  It's success depends on that small action.

Click "read more" for an introduction to the forum.

Five years ago I certainly believed my clients when they told me: "I told this guy Frank that he had to call you." I didn't think they were lying to my face about the referrals they were sending.

After the 10,000th time (it seemed) a client told me they referred someone who never contacted me, I began to call it "The Bermuda Referral Triangle."

So... where were they? Why didn't Frank, or Joan, or Amin, or Josephina ever call, despite glowing recommendations and urgings from their friends?

Chinese Medicine as a Social Movement PDF Print E-mail

“Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing more than medicine on a large scale.  The physicians are the natural attorneys of the poor, and the social problems should largely be solved by them.”

                        ~Rudolph Virchow

As medical practitioners and healers we are activists and organizers.  We give a voice to the voiceless, whether it be validating the experiences of a patient, advocating for the right to healthcare, or paving the way for natural medicine in America.  In school we learn about disease and its pathological mechanisms, but in the end all disease is an issue of powerlessness.  We contract disease in the unoccupied parts of our body, the parts where the light of our Shen, our spirit-consciousness, is absent.  These are the parts we have forgotten and ignored, that in turn give us pain or problems as a reminder of their existence.  On a larger scale this is also true in our society; the organism of America contracts disease as well.  There are many places where spirit is absent, where power is taken from people and oppression occurs.  I believe as a healer it is my responsibility to address disease on every level and I see Oriental medicine as a mighty instrument for this work.  I use the term “Oriental medicine” specifically to include all the various healing arts that have sprouted from the roots of Eastern philosophy.   There is a time and place for philosophical debate, but for the purpose of this discussion let us broaden our perspective to survey our role as healthcare providers in the current landscape of America.

Functional Gastrointestinal PDF Print E-mail

Recently, the OANP held it's monthly meeting with Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis, who covered the topics of hiatal hernia and ileocecal valve syndromes.  This CE presentation was inspired by Dr. SSL's new book on functional disorders of the gastrointestinal system.  Functional problems are often seen in natural medicine because they are a manifestation of the body's normal activities.  Although the GI may have problems caused by hypersensitive innervation, abnormal perstalsis or even central nervous system impairment, functional disorders are elusive due to normal blood tests, endoscopy and imaging studies.  This can easily lead to misdiagnosis and chronic systemic health problems.

Naturopathic Medicine Meets The American Medical Student Association PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has been around since the ‘50s, and its 68,000 members have a reputation for progressive, activist work in the medical community.  For instance, in 2007 AMSA set four strategic priorities:

•    Quality, affordable healthcare for all
•    Global health equity
•    Enriching medicine through diversity
•    Professional integrity, development, and student well being

In addition, AMSA’s humanistic medicine interest group has long been a voice of advocacy for CAM therapies and cooperation between conventional and CAM practitioners.  In 2005, interest in naturopathic medicine grew so strong within the group that they added a naturopathic medicine interest group.

I, along with about a dozen other ND students, a handful of pre-meds, and about 15,000 MD and DO students, attended the national convention this March.  We heard lectures from some of the most influential and experienced voices of effective compassion in medicine, and attended workshops on interesting and relevant topics like Street Medicine, Gender Variant Children, and the Activist Medicine at Large Protests.
